Governance

General Council
The General Council is the ODA's overall governing body, consisting of approximately 100 individuals elected by the 38 province-wide Component Societies, and student sections. The General Council sets the policies and direction of the ODA, and is accountable to the Component Societies. Each of the nine specialty sections is invited to send one official, non-voting observer to every meeting of the General Council. As an official observer, this representative may request and is usually granted the Chair's permission to speak to issues during Council meetings.

Board of Directors
The Board of Directors is a body of 15 dentists consisting of four Elective Officers (President, Immediate Past President, President-Elect, and Vice-President) and 11 other members elected by the General Council. Dentists cannot serve on both the General Council and Board of Directors. The Board is responsible to ensure that the goals and policies of the ODA (as determined by the Council) are carried out and met. They do this primarily through the expertise and work of the ODA committees. The Board elects the Vice President (from among themselves) and committee members (from the membership at large). The Board is accountable to the General Council.

Committees
Committees are accountable to, and report regularly to the Board of Directors. Committee reports are made to the Board, and the Board reports to the General Council on progress on issues and directives. The Board does not provide the Council with a report on each committee, but on progress made on specific goals, issues and policies which arises from committee work. The Board sets committee terms of reference and elects committee members.

Staff
Staff provide support to the membership at large, primarily through their work for committees. The Staff Policy Advisor provides information and guidance to the committee and acts as a liaison between the committee and the Board of Directors. The Staff Support/Secretary provides clerical support and completes other projects as requested for the committee members and the Staff Policy Advisor.
