Speakers' Biographies
Dr. Peter Hong received his DDS from the University of Toronto (U of T) with honours
in 1983. After graduation, he worked in public health and started a general practice in
Toronto. Dr. Hong also worked at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre as a staff dentist
for more than 30 years. He continues in clinical practice and teaches dental students
at U of T. Dr. Hong began working for the RCDSO on a part-time basis in 2001 as a
Monitoring Officer. He joined the Professional Liability Program as the Senior Dental
Consultant and is now Assistant Manager, Dental.
Ms. Lisa Bruni graduated with a degree in Journalism in 2009. After a period of time working as a journalist, she returned to law school and graduated from Queen's University in 2014. Lisa has defended many malpractice lawsuits involving regulated health professionals and has acted as counsel in regulatory proceedings. In April 2018, she left private practice to focus her attention on assisting Ontario’s dentists as a Legal Advisor with the Professional Liability Program.
Course Description and Learning Objectives
PLP staff will share their expertise and use case studies in promoting patient safety and managing patient care when an adverse clinical event or negative treatment outcome arises. This interactive presentation is designed to help dentists identify an adverse event, understand their legal obligations and communicate effectively with patients to mitigate potential consequences.
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
Define adverse events; understand their legal and professional obligations when an adverse event occurs; develop strategies for communicating with patients and their families about an adverse event; and manage patient care when an adverse event occurs.
