Speaker Biography
Dr. Erin Watson graduated with the gold medal from the Faculty of Dentistry at
McGill University in 2012. She has completed a residency in Hospital Based Dentistry
at Mount Sinai hospital in Toronto, as well as a master’s in health administration
at University of Toronto. She is a dentist in the Department of Dental Oncology at
Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto. She provides dental care for head
and-neck cancer patients, patients at risk of medication-related osteonecrosis of
the jaw and patients undergoing autologous and allogenic stem-cell/bone-marrow
transplants. Dr. Watson also conducts clinical research, with a special interest in
dental care for patients with acute leukemia, quality improvement and standards
of care.
Course Description and Learning Objectives
The goal of this course is to provide the dentist with fundamental knowledge
to allow them to safely provide dental care for cancer patients. With current
statistics suggesting that three in five Canadians will develop cancer in
their lifetime, dentists will be seeing an increasing number of patients in
their practice who either have cancer or a history of cancer. This course will
make dentists aware of: long-term side-effects of cancer treatments and
their impact on oral health, prevention of unnecessary long-term sequelae of
cancer treatments and when a patient can be safely managed in a private
practice setting.
Learning Objectives:
• To identify cancer treatments that may place patients at risk of profound
xerostomia and caries, with strategies for management
• To avoid significant complications in patients at risk of
osteoradionecrosis and medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw
• To feel comfortable providing safe dental care to the vast majority of
cancer patients, including patients undergoing chemotherapy, and when
to refer
