The ODA Board of Directors has completed its consideration of an independent task force report that reviewed Dr. Jonathan Mayer’s social media posts. Dr. Mayer has accepted the findings of the report and has committed to fulfilling all of its recommendations. The Board has therefore decided that Dr. Mayer should be given the opportunity to comply and has ratified him as President-Elect for 2026-27.
In February, the ODA was informed of concerns from members and others about Dr. Mayer’s social media activity. In response, the Board established an independent task force to review the matter and provide recommendations to support Board decision-making. The task force identified steps focused on accountability, education and rebuilding trust through reflection, listening and learning.
In reaching its decision, the Board carefully considered the findings of the report alongside the broader context and the diverse responses and perspectives of members throughout this process. The Board’s decision reflects its responsibility to support a fair and credible process. The Board has decided to release the full report of the independent task force alongside this statement to provide transparency into its process and the considerations that informed its decision.
Dr. Mayer has committed to all of the recommended steps, which involve structured learning and reflection regarding responsible use of social media in a leadership role, interfaith and intercultural competency, discussion with a representative group of members who have objected to his posts, and making an apology to affected members.
The Board expects this work to be carried forward in a meaningful way. The ODA stands against discrimination of any kind and is committed to an inclusive, civil discourse, where all people are treated with respect and given an opportunity to participate. We are committed to building and maintaining trust, unity and confidence among members.
Dr. David Brown
Chair, Board of Directors and President
